Plant surfacing: why, when and how?

Plant topping is a gardening technique that involves covering the soil around plants with a layer of surface material. This method has many benefits, including reducing weed growth, conserving moisture, and protecting plant roots from extreme temperatures. In this article, we will explore in depth the benefits of plant topping and how to apply this technique at home.

WHY DO YOU HAVE TO SURFACE YOUR PLANTS ?

Generally practiced on plants that are in a pot so big that they cannot be repotted, the surfacing can be done on any indoor plant. As potting soil is full of nutrients for plants, it is essential to renew it as soon as it becomes too old and therefore deprived of its nutrients. While repotting (a complete change of potting soil and pot) can be done only every 2 to 3 years depending on the variety of your plants, resurfacing must be done more frequently to give your plant food and prevent it from stopping its growth.

WHEN TO RESURFACE YOUR PLANT ?

At least once a year, or as soon as your plant shows signs of slowing down its growth. Ideally, proceed to a surfacing at the very beginning of the spring and at the end of the summer. Since plants do not need much nutrients during their fall/winter dormancy period, there is no need to resurface at this time. However, if your plant seems to be suffering from the last weeks of winter (leaves falling for example), you can proceed to a resurfacing at the end of February-beginning of March (but without using fertilizer).

a good care routine for your plants

Just like us, a good skincare routine always starts with good hydration. Don't forget to water your plants to keep them healthy !

HOW TO DO A RESURFACING ?

Start by removing all dead leaves from the surface of the soil. Also remove the first 3 to 5 centimeters of potting soil (depending on the size of your plant/pot). Put a new and fresh potting soil for green plants on top. Fill in well on the edges and up to the top of the horticultural pot. Pack well and water generously, then wait for all the water to drain from the bottom before placing your plant back in its pot or dish.

In conclusion

Plant resurfacing is an effective way to improve the growth and health of your plants. It is important to do it at the right time, using the right materials and being careful not to damage the plants' roots. By incorporating resurfacing into your plant care routine, you can enjoy many benefits, such as reducing weed growth, conserving moisture and protecting plant roots from extreme temperatures.
